Out Dated Psychology And Psychiatric Methodology

How do we understand the way we are supposed to act and behave outside societal appearances? Are the thoughts many of us have about religions, life, death and love common amongst the majority or is it something that I just notice? These questions and many others have often had me wonder if I am unique or different to the degree that others cannot understand myself, but the truth is after utilizing the internet and speaking to people around the world I have discovered that this is common amongst the majority of people around the world. Many times people with these similar thoughts feel isolated and alone, and it does not help those whom already suffer from social anxiety or depression which I also discovered was more commonalities that people who had these thoughts suffered. The world not only has taken technological leaps which has given humanity more access to knowledge and power than ever before, but in doing so humanity was not ready to psychologically adapt to these vast changes and unfortunately the Psychological Departments around the world were not equipped with equivalent readiness to help people.

First there is a lack of communication between the psychological and psychiatric associations around the world despite all the ability to do so. Second, the mental treatment methodology that has been applied for decades has not truly changed and the fundamentals of psychology are out dated frankly. It seems as well that psychiatry has replaced psychology and this is because of the money that is made by big pharmaceutical corporations once again. The lack of coherence and acceptance of this has allowed this generation of young people around the world to simply become lost when it comes to understanding their own feelings and furthermore it has caused the majority to seek answers from the internet medical websites or “peers” that can offer insight. The sad part of this is that this was prior to the Covid-19 pandemic which only made matters worse and as vaccinations are curving this pandemic to ease restrictions many are left in the dark of how to behave in society and where to go to find the right moral compass for themselves.

The result of this failure has led to many terrible incidents from extreme violent behaviour to suicide, which has been increasing throughout the world dramatically and yet the focus of many Governments is not mental health but simply just getting back to normal. The problem is people cannot back to “normal” when the idea of such is something that has not been addressed really for a decade prior to the pandemic and going forward without a real plan that involves addressing this exact issue of outdated applications of psychology and the abuse of psychiatric medications to try and have a “quick fix” this will only get worse. As a student of psychology I am not saying that everything that is being used to treat people does not work, but I have noticed that there is a complete disconnect within the psychology world when it comes to addressing new ways of treating people in today’s world. The methods created in the past are obsolete in many ways, especially since we have the ability to actually measure chemical levels on a very detailed scale of the brain and body along with the use of computer rendering of the brain and other amazing analysis that show scientist how the brain works and why, what is the reasoning to keep prioritizing the methods by past psychologist who had no access to this technology at all? And why is it continually taught as the primary basis of psychology? I understand that once again there are methods which are useful but compared to what has been learned about the brain and how it functions in connection with the body it seems rather silly to continue emphasizing technics. Many people in these fields maybe upset with what I am saying, and actually many whom I discussed with this prior to writing this in the American Psychological Association agreed that there does need to be change but that the foundations of psychology need to be taught, and I agree with such sentiment as long as it is being taught as a history lesson and not something that should be prioritized as the main philosophy future psychologist and psychiatrist should adhere to. I hope within the next decade that there becomes more unity between these sciences and that instead of using redundant methodology that is out dated, that future psychologist utilize the technology available and also create a division that combines neuroscience and psychiatry in order to create proper treatments going forward.
